BABY ALPACA

BABY ALPACA

This material is spun in Japan from baby alpaca grazed in the high Andes Mountains of Peru at altitudes of 4000m or more, and then slowly woven at a weaving mill in Hashima City, Gifu Prefecture. This is ATON's original tweed material, characterized by its light weight, warmth and insulation.

What is "baby alpaca"?

Baby alpaca" is combed from alpacas in their first year of life (most are up to 3 months old). The fibers are fine and supple, with almost no prickling. It is also a very rare material because it is only used once in a lifetime for each alpaca until it turns one year old, making baby hair (1% of the total alpaca material) a very rare material. The secret to the warmth of the alpaca hair that withstands the harsh cold of the highlands where they graze, where temperatures can reach minus 20 degrees Celsius in winter, lies in the structure of the fiber. The fiber has a cavity in the center of the hair, which allows it to contain warm air.
